CTX Pitching

How we read a hitter, where we attack her weakness, how perceived velocity wins at-bats, and what we throw and when. Know it before you step in the circle.

The Rules We Play By

Pitching Non-Negotiables

Get Strike One

First-pitch strikes run the at-bat. The hitter behind in the count has to come to us.

Attack the Weakness

Read the stance, find the hole, and live there until she proves she can beat it.

Change Her Eyes

Up, then down. Soft, then hard. Perceived velocity beats real velocity every time.

No Free Passes

We own the zone and the inside half. She has to hit her way on — we don't walk her.

Know Her Before You Throw

Read the Stance, Attack the Weakness

How she stands tells us where her bat cannot go. Find the hole, and stay there until she proves she can beat it.

Even or Closed

The Read

Even or closed front side, hands high, weight centered, quiet lower half.

Her Weakness

She is tied up inside. A closed front side cannot clear fast enough, so her barrel drags on anything in at the hands.

Where We Attack

Hard in at the hands, then soft away off the outer corner and below the knees.

Open Stance

The Read

Front foot open toward us, hips pre-turned, looking to pull the ball to her power side.

Her Weakness

She cannot cover the outer half. She has to reach for it and her hands get out front early.

Where We Attack

Start her away and stay away. Fastball on the outer edge, then the change-up or drop off the outside corner.

Crouched or Choked Up

The Read

Deep knee bend, short stride, hands low, bat choked up for contact.

Her Weakness

She has to stand up to get to a high pitch, and her hands cannot get there in time. She wants to be comfortable.

Where We Attack

High heat above the hands, then soft stuff at the knees and below the zone.

Long Stride, Weight Forward

The Read

Long stride, wide base, weight drifting to the front foot before contact.

Her Weakness

She is out front early. Anything off-speed leaves her reaching and swinging over the top.

Where We Attack

Change-up first, then hard in to freeze her. Break her timing before we bring the speed.

Pull Happy, Wrapped Bat

The Read

Weight loaded on the back foot, bat wrapped behind her head, hunting the pull.

Her Weakness

She cannot get to the ball away. Her barrel is long and late on anything on the outer half.

Where We Attack

Fastball away off the end of the bat, then a rise or screw in once she cheats out there.

Slapper, Lefty Speed

The Read

Left-handed, up in the front of the box, moving as she swings, trying to beat out a ground ball.

Her Weakness

She cannot handle anything tight. A pitch at her hands takes the bat right out of the swing.

Where We Attack

Fastball in at the hands and above her barrel, then a change-up away to get her out front.

The Equalizer

What Is Perceived Velocity?

Perceived velocity is how fast a pitch looks to the hitter, not how fast it actually is. A pitch that reaches her sooner than her eyes expect plays harder than its number, and a pitch that shows up later than she expects makes her swing early. We do not have to throw harder — we have to make her wrong about when the ball is coming.

How We Use It to Our Advantage

Change the Eye Level

Up, then down. A high pitch makes the next low pitch look like it takes forever; a low pitch makes the next high one jump on her.

Pitch Off the Pitch Before

Hard, then soft. Soft, then hard. Every pitch is thrown to make the next one look faster or slower than it really is.

Change the Look, Not the Speed

Same arm speed, different pitch. Our change-up is a fastball to her eyes until it is not — that is where the ground balls come from.

Work From Ahead

A hitter behind in the count is guessing, and a guessing hitter is always late. Strike one turns real speed into perceived speed.

Hold Her Eyes

A long look at the ball, a quicker or slower tempo in the circle, a small change in our setup — all of it buys us inches of timing.

PITCH

Our Arsenal

Location first, spin second, speed third. Every pitch we throw has a job, and every pitch has a place it goes.

The Fastball

  • Our foundation — thrown to both sides of the plate at two eye levels: at the knees and above the hands.
  • Location over speed. We would rather throw it a little slower to a corner than harder over the middle.
  • It sets up everything else. We never abandon the fastball because she fouled one off.

The Change-Up

  • The great equalizer — same arm speed, less speed, at the knees and below the zone.
  • Our pitch when she is out front, hunting the fastball, or cheating to one side.
  • It only works if the arm looks the same. A slow arm gives away a slow pitch.

Movement & Breaking

  • Spin beats speed. A drop ball that finishes at the knees gets ground balls and swings over the top.
  • The rise goes above the hands and up out of the zone — swings under it, weak fly balls, and a hitter who has to change her whole plan.
  • Every pitch starts with the same arm path as the fastball. Nothing we throw announces itself.
Pitch Calling

When Do We Throw What?

The count tells us what she expects. We throw the opposite of her expectation — and we never give in.

0-0

Strike one with our best pitch in her weakest spot. No free looks, no wasted pitch.

1-0

Still our pitch and still her weakness. We do not give in just because we are ahead in the count.

2-0

She is hunting hard. Off-speed or the edge of the zone for a strike — never a fastball over the middle.

3-0

She is taking. Pour a strike into her weakest spot. We do not walk hitters.

0-1

Now we can expand a little. Fastball at the knees on the edge, then off-speed away.

1-1

Our pitch, our location, her weakness. Attack the same place until she proves she can beat it.

0-2 / 1-2

Expand the zone: above the hands or below the knees. Off the plate, but close enough that she cannot let it go.

2-2

Back to her weakness at the edge of the zone. Make her beat our best pitch.

3-1 / 3-2

Full count, no free passes. Our best pitch at the knees, in the zone. She has to hit it.
