Player Study Guide

CTX Defense

Every position, every responsibility. Know your alignment, your cutoff job, and your bunt coverage before you take the field.

Our Defensive Philosophy

Be the Smartest Team on the Field

Athleticism gets you on the field. Knowing the game keeps you on it. Our defense is built on the ability to read the play, understand the situation, and make the right decision before the ball is ever hit.

Softball IQ is the equalizer of athleticism.

We will not always be the fastest or the strongest team on the field — but we can always be the smartest. When our nine know every situation better than their nine, talent stops being the difference. That is how we place brains over God-given ability.

IQ Is the Equalizer

Speed, arm strength, and power are gifts. Softball IQ is earned, and it is the one tool every player can build. When the game gets tight, the smarter team wins.

Brains Over Ability

We put brains over God-given athleticism. We would rather have the player who knows where the ball is going than the player who only knows how to run fast.

Nine Players, One Plan

Every defender knows the alignment, the cut, the backup, and where the play is before every pitch. Nobody is guessing when the ball is hit.

Think Two Plays Ahead

We know the runner, the score, the outs, and the count. Smart teams win the play before it happens — the ball just confirms it.

The Rules We Play By

Bunt Coverage Keys

Right Side

The 1st baseman charges the bunt. The 2nd baseman covers 1st base and takes the throw.

Second Base

The shortstop covers 2nd base on every bunt and takes the throw for the force.

Left Side

The 3rd baseman charges. If she does not field the bunt she returns to 3rd; if she does, the pitcher peels off behind her and covers 3rd.

Outfield Backups

Left field backs up 3rd, center field backs up 2nd, right field backs up 1st. Every time.

P

Pitcher

The closest defender to home plate — the fifth infielder and the first line of defense on anything soft.

Alignment

  • Start on the rubber, square to the plate, weight balanced and feet ready to move in any direction.
  • Finish every pitch in an athletic position 4-6 feet behind the circle so you can reach a ball in front of the circle or a bunt down either line.
  • After the pitch you are the fifth infielder — hold your position behind the circle and never drift toward the middle of the infield.

Cutoff Responsibilities

  • Know your cut before the pitch — on every outfield throw you have a job, and you have to get there early.
  • Cut 2: cover 1st base.
  • Cut 3: back up 3rd base, 15-20 feet behind the bag and in line with the throw.
  • Cut 4: back up home plate, directly behind the catcher.
  • On a ball hit to the right side with the 1st baseman pulled off the bag, sprint to cover 1st base.
  • On an overthrow, sprint to the next base and cut the ball off to stop the runners from advancing.

Bunt Coverage

  • Own everything inside the circle — charge hard, field with two hands, and look the runner back before you throw.
  • Call Ball, ball! on any bunt you can reach so the catcher and the corners clear out.
  • When the 3rd baseman fields a bunt, peel off behind her and cover 3rd base.
  • When the catcher or the 1st baseman fields the bunt, fill into the next closest rundown responsibility.
